Since 18 March 2011, there have been anti-government protests in Syria. The unrest has escalated, and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs is currently advising against all travel to Syria and is urging Swedish citizens to leave the country.
Normally, Syria is relatively safe to visit. Crime-levels are low, but pick-pockets operate and minor theft occurs, particularly in the older parts of Damascus.
Roads in urban areas and between cities/major towns are good, but rural roads are poor. Driving is aggressive. Top tip: please note that vehicles in roundabouts must give way to vehicles entering the roundabout.
