American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of the sovereign state of Samoa. The main, largest and most populous, island is Tutuila, with the Manu’a Islands, Rose Atoll, and Swains Island also included in the territory.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for American Samoa. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza. Travellers might also consider the vaccinations for Hepatitis B and rabies, according to the specifics of their travel.
There is active Zika virus transmission in American Samoa. All travellers should take meticulous anti-mosquito bite measures during the daytime. Pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant should avoid travel to the country.
American Samoa has risk of ongoing Dengue and Chikungunya transmission. Peak transmission occurs from January to June. Insect protection measures should be used.
Travellers should be aware of the risks associated with travellers’ ailments such as diarrhoea. Travellers must take all necessary precautions when drinking water or eating food within the country and only drink water from sealed bottles obtained from a reputable source or water that has been filtered and boiled.
It is advisable to bring anti-diarrhoea medication and oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration.
Tuberculosis is endemic in American Samoa.
It is strongly advised that travellers purchase comprehensive medical insurance before travelling to American Samoa. There are general medical facilities available on the islands. However, serious problems may require evacuation to Hawaii or New Zealand.
Pass
To enter American Samoa, a passport that is valid for six months from the date of departure is required for all nationals.
Visum
Visas are not required for US, Canadians and citizens from long term member-states of the EU to visit the territory. If you are a national of a country that has recently joined the EU, or from anywhere else in the world, you should verify at your nearest US embassy whether you require a visa. If you are not a US citizen, and are intending to work or do business in American Samoa, it is likely you will require a visa. Again, you should verify with your nearest American Embassy.
All visitors must possess documentary proof of onward travel, sufficient funds to cover their stay and a confirmed accommodation reservation. Advance hotel reservations are required in the absence of a local sponsor.
Yellow Fever vaccination certificates are required only if you have been in an infected area prior to arrival in American Samoa.
