Bahrain
Översikt
Demonstrations and clashes continue on a regular basis in and around Shi’a villages, constituting the main security threat in the country. At the height of the unrest from February-March 2011, deadly clashes in central Manama were frequent, severely disrupting business operations. The ruling al-Khalifa family invited security forces from the Gulf Cooperation Council to quell the protests in March 2011. The anti-government protests frequently become violent and routinely include the blocking of major highways, vigilante-type checkpoints and the use of Molotov cocktails.
Following the successful quelling of the protest using force, a low level insurgency has remained active particularly in the Shia majority regions with periodic attacks recorded every year.
