The Faroe Islands is an island group and forms part of Denmark. Situated between the Norwegian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the island group is roughly equidistant between Iceland and Scotland, although it is slightly closer to Scotland which is some 310km away. Although still under Danish control, the islands are achieving increased autonomy, but defence and military concerns, as well as law and other key administration remain under Danish control.
Hälsa, sjukdomar och vaccination
Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Faroe Islands. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza.
Tap water is safe to drink in Faroe Islands.
Medical facilities in the Faroe Islands are limited. The coast guard and Atlantic Airways have helicopters that can be used for emergency evacuation in more serious cases. The main hospital is located in the capital. Emergency care wards are available in Tórshavn, Klaksvík on Borðoy and Tvøroyri on Suðuroy.
Pass
Visitors from Nordic countries do not require a passport. However, some form of formal identification is required. Generally, nationalities from EU and non-EU countries do require a passport. The Faroe Islands are not part of the Schengen Agreement, as such visitors from Schengen countries do require a passport.
Visum
Travellers from the Nordic countries and EU/EAA countries do not need a visa to enter for a stay up to three months. Visitors from countries where a visa is required, must have a visa valid for 90 days. Those with Schengen visas cannot enter the Faroe Islands. A specific visa is required. While the Faroe Islands is closely linked to Denmark, a visa that is valid for one will not be applicable for the other. Visa application procedures for the Faroe Islands usually go through Danish embassies abroad.
