The Republic of Kiribati is a nation of 21 inhabited islands, divided into three groups; the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands and the Line Islands. Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Kiribati. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza. Travellers might also consider the vaccinations for Hepatitis B and rabies, according to the specifics of their travel.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission. Other mosquito-borne diseases, including Dengue, Chikungunya and Lymphatic filariasis, are present year-round. Travellers should take meticulous anti-mosquito bite measures at all times.

Typhoid fever vaccination is recommended when going outside the areas usually visited by tourists such as traveling extensively in the interior of the country, for persons on working assignments in remote areas, or travelers visiting for extended periods of time.

Travellers should be aware of the risks associated with travellers’ ailments such as diarrhoea. It is advisable to bring anti-diarrhoea medication and oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration.

Visitors are advised to drink only bottled water, or water that has been filtered and boiled. Similarly, avoid ice cubes as it may be produced from tap water, or produce washed in local water unless it has been peeled or cooked.

Medical facilities in Kiribati are limited. Due to the general lack of medicines and supplies, most health clinics are only adequate for routine medical treatment. Medical evacuation to other places will often be required to handle serious illnesses and injuries. It is advisable to acquire a comprehensive travel health insurance before travel, although this insurance is unlikely to cover medical services at most facilities as most clinics expect direct cash payments. In emergency, visitors should dial 999.

There are no pharmacies in Kiribati. Travellers should bring their own medications, enough for their stay.

Passports are required for entry into Kiribati.

Visum

Citizens of over 70 countries currently have a visa exemption arrangement with Kiribati and are exempt from visa requirements for tourist and business visits. The length of stay permitted on visa exemption differs depending on nationality. This visa exemption arrangement includes USA, Australia, Canada, and all EU nationals. Visitors to Kiribati must be travelling on a passport that is valid for at least six months.

To be granted the permit on arrival, visitors must be able to show a confirmed return or onward journey ticket, and evidence of sufficient funds for the intended period of stay.
