Lebanon is exposed to multiple security risks linked to the wider regional situation in the Middle East that periodically destabilises its volatile political arena. A wide host of militant groups, sectarian political parties and foreign powers all compete for influence in Lebanon, putting it in close proximity to the fault lines of the Middle East. Despite the war in neighbouring Syria, the Lebanese state has surprised many by preserving stability throughout the chaos, primarily by keeping the army and security forces politically neutral. Since mid-October 2019 however, the country has been rocked by a series of protests over various economic issues and that eventually caused the collapse of Saad Hariri's government. Unrest has broken out as protesters demanded for the resignation of the entire ruling class. In general, Beirut and the south are secure for travel, but crime and terrorism risks sharply increase in the north-eastern city of Tripoli and in the Bekaa Valley. All travel to the Syrian border should be restricted. 

Hälsa, sjukdomar och vaccination

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Lebanon. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza. Travellers might also consider the vaccinations for Hepatitis B and rabies, according to the specifics of their travel.

A valid International Vaccination Certificate with proof of Polio vaccination is required from all travelers arriving from and going to Polio-affected countries.

Typhoid fever vaccination is recommended when going outside the areas usually visited by tourists such as traveling extensively in the interior of the country, for persons on working assignments in remote areas, or travellers visiting for extended periods of time.

Travellers should be aware of the risks associated with travellers’ ailments such as diarrhoea. Travellers must take all necessary precautions when drinking water or eating food within the country and only drink water from sealed bottles obtained from a reputable source.

It is advisable to bring anti-diarrhoea medication and oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration.

The standard of medical care in Lebanon is generally very good and doctors are usually well trained. Similarly, the quality of facilities and the availability of medicines also tend to be very high. Although comprehensive health insurance is highly recommended, patients should be aware that they may be expected to pay for treatment in cash and that treatment is often very expensive.

The best and most modern facilities can be found in Beirut and the other major cities. Whilst the rural areas do not enjoy as good facilities, nowhere in the country is more than a few hours away from high quality medical care. Doctors often speak both English and French.

Foreign embassies will be able to recommend hospitals frequented by members of their expatriate communities.

Pass

A passport must be valid for at least three months to enter Lebanon.

Visum

Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar does not require a visa to travel to Lebanon.

It is possible for citizens of many countries, including EU, USA, Australia, Japan and Brazil  to obtain visas upon arrival at Beirut International Airport or other ports of entry. Visitors wishing to do this may be asked to provide details of return tickets and contact details for the duration of their stay in Lebanon.

Visas on arrival are not available for all nationalities, and so it is advisable to check with an Embassy whether or not it is necessary to arrange for a visa in advance. Failure to obtain a visa in advance may result in a refusal of entry into Lebanon.
