Mali
Översikt
Mali has experienced decades of political instability following independence from France in 1960, including 23 years of military dictatorship, several army coups and several rebellions in the north involving ethnic Tuareg militant groups. A military coup in August 2020 was reported following mass protests since June, calling for the resignation of President Keïta over corruption, poverty and security issues. Civil unrest risks have subsided following the ousting of Keïta. Another recent coup took place in May 2021 which indicates the armed forces are unlikely to cede control.
Besides that, a high threat of kidnapping remains in northern Mali despite recent government attempts to improve the regional security environment. This threat is most severe in the north where both Islamist terrorist groups and criminal gangs carry out kidnappings, often targeting foreigners.
