The small island nation of Mauritius is considered one of Africa’s most stable and prosperous countries, offering a largely safe environment, good medical services and competitive business conditions. Political violence and civil unrest are uncommon; peaceful protests tend to peak before and after an election. Crime rate in Mauritius is considered as low, though incidents of rape are comparatively high.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Mauritius. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip to Mauritius. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza.

Mauritius has risk of ongoing Chikungunya and Dengue transmission. Travellers should take meticulous anti-mosquito bite measures during the daytime.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is only required from travellers coming from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

In addition to these health risks, travellers diarrhoea is the most common travel-related medical problem affecting travellers to Mauritius. It is advisable to bring anti-diarrhoea medication and oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration. Travellers must take all necessary precautions when drinking water or eating food within the country and only drink water from sealed bottles obtained from a reputable source or water that has been boiled.

Public medical facilities are numerous and of a high standard. There are also several relatively inexpensive private clinics, which are staffed mainly by doctors educated in the West. Foreign visitors have to pay at state-run clinics and hospitals because there is no reciprocal health agreement with other governments. Emergency evacuation health insurance is advised for those at serious risk.

Personal medication must be covered by prescriptions, which you must bring along with you. They must also have been legitimately obtained from a pharmacy. Scheduled drugs (such as tranquillisers, strong painkillers, hypnotics, morphine) should be authorised before importation; or you could be arrested.

Please be aware that if applying for a work permit or residence visa, one will be required to take an HIV test.

The country has reported a declining trend of Covid-19 infections amid the global pandemic as of November 2020. Several restrictions are in place, alongside with measures to further prevent the spread of the virus in Mauritius. 

Pass

Travellers should carry a passport with at least six months validity when entering Mauritius, as well as proof of return travel.

Visum

Travellers from the EU, US, Canada, Brazil, Australia and China do not need a visa to travel to Mauritius. For those from most other countries visas are available on arrival. It is best to check with your local Mauritian consulate or embassy for up-to-date information on visa requirements.

Visitors should be aware that they will be required to provide accommodation details to immigration officials on arrival. If arriving from a country where malaria is endemic, you may be required to give a blood sample for screening.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is also expected of visitors arriving from infected areas.
