Saint-Barthélemy

St Barthelemy is one of four islands that make up the French West Indies in the Leeward Islands chain being closely linked with Guadeloupe. As such the island is a French Department and the culture, language and history is strongly influenced accordingly.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Saint Barthelemy. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza.
There has been Zika virus transmission in Saint Barthelemy in the past and resurgence could occur. All travellers should take meticulous anti-mosquito bite measures during the daytime. Pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant should avoid travel to the country.
Saint Barthelemy has risk of ongoing Chikungunya transmission. Insect protection measures are essential.
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
Travellers should be aware of the risks associated with travellers’ ailments such as diarrhoea. It is advisable to bring anti-diarrhoea medication and oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration.
Visitors are advised to drink only bottled water or water that has been filtered and boiled. Similarly, avoid ice cubes as it may be produced from tap water, or produce washed in local water unless it has been peeled or cooked.
Gustavia has a small hospital (Irenee de Bruyn Hospital; telephone + 590 51-1950) with a small team of resident doctors. However, for any serious or major medical procedures, evacuation to Guadeloupe or a hospital even further a field (USA, Puerto Rica, even France) is likely to be necessary. Comprehensive medical insurance is strongly advised.

Pass
All visitors to Saint Barthélemy will require a passport valid for at least six months (although an ‘Overseas Collectivity’ of France, Saint Barthélemy is not covered by the Schengen agreement and so special privileges are not accorded to citizens of states party to Schengen).
Visum
Visas to visit Saint Barthélemy are not required by nationals of many countries, including those from EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan for business or leisure. However, this is not true for citizens of all countries and so it is advisable to check with an embassy before departure.
A return or onward ticket will need to be produced be all of those travelling to Saint Barthélemy.
It is unusual for any specific vaccinations to be required.
