Saint Martin

St Martin, often referred to as St Martin / St Maarten, is a uniquely divided island between France and the Netherlands. The division is almost a 60-40 split in favour of France, with St Martin (France) to the north and St Maarten (Netherlands) to the south. The island is situated some 300km east of Puerto Rico.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Saint Martin. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza. Travellers might also consider the vaccinations for Hepatitis B and rabies, according to the specifics of their travel.
Dengue is endemic in Saint Martin. Risk is present year-round in both urban and rural areas.
There is a risk of ongoing Chikungunya and Zika virus transmission in Saint Martin. Travellers should take meticulous anti-mosquito bite measures during the daytime. Pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant should avoid travel to the country.
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is only required from travellers coming from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
There is risk of African Tick-Bite fever present in Saint Martin. Travellers who participate in outdoor activities in rural regions of endemic areas should take measures to prevent tick bites.
Good medical care is available throughout the French West Indies, but not all doctors speak or understand English. General health care facilities, including emergency services in health service general hospitals, and the availability of doctors (GPs), are very good and of an equivalent standard to those found in mainland France. Specialist treatment is also available.
Pass
Passports must be valid for the duration of the stay and an onward/return ticket along with proof of sufficient funds must be presented. Entry requirements are the same as those applied by French immigration in Europe.
Visum
Americans, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealanders, Irish and other European nationals do not require visas for stays of up to 90 days. South Africans can also be admitted through presentation of a Schengen Visa. A departure tax of US$20 is charged for all international departures from Juliana Airport (Sint Maarten) and by sea.
