St. Pierre och Miquelon

St Pierre et Miquelon is a group of small French islands situated off the coast of North America. The islands are a holdover from French colonial influence, situated 50 km south of Newfoundland. The series of island are a geographic archipelago formed of eight islands, with St Pierre and Miquelon being the largest two. In total, the land area of the all the islands equates to 242sq.km. The two main islands are only separated by a narrow strait measuring 6km wide. The total population of the islands is around 6,000.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza. Travellers might also consider the vaccinations for Hepatitis B and rabies, according to the specifics of their travel.

There are a few general practitioners on the islands. Those who are there generally accept insurance. For serious emergencies, most locals are evacuated to facilities in Canada, so you should confirm that your insurance policy covers this type of events.

Pass

Despite being part of France – and by extension the European Union – travellers from all nations will need a passport to get into St. Pierre and Miquelon as the only entry route passes through Canada, although canadians may enter without a passport by providing any valid ID with photo.

Visum

European and Canadian travellers do not need a visa. Other non-European travellers are advised to check with their local French consulate or embassy to ascertain whether or not they require a visa.
