Uganda enjoys an environment of relative stability and continues to attract foreign visitors and commercial investment. Visitors to Uganda may encounter generally low crime levels, which include residential burglary and street crime. Armed banditry also poses a threat in remote and border regions. The political system is repressive and corrupt, but also stable. Political protests have been sporadic since 2019 and may turn violent. Medical facilities in Uganda are considered inadequate in most areas, particularly in rural regions, and in severe cases evacuation may be required.

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-8 weeks prior to departing for Uganda. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip to Uganda. The following vaccinations are recommended: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio and influenza.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required on arrival from all travellers 9 months of age and older..

Uganda has risk of ongoing Chikungunya and Dengue transmission. Insect protection measures are essential.

There have been confirmed recent cholera cases in Kampala.

Ebola outbreak was declared in Uganda in September, 2022. During this outbreak, there were 164 cases (142 confirmed and 22 probable) and 55 confirmed deaths. On 11 January 2023, Uganda declared the end of the outbreak.

Schistosomiasis risk is present in the whole country, with the highest incidence rates reported from the shores of Lake Albert, the Albert Nile River, Lake Kyoga, and the eastern shores of Lake Victoria. Avoid swimming in fresh water, such as lakes, rivers, ponds, and wetlands and eating raw foods which have not been washed with purified water.

HIV/AIDS is widespread in the general population, with an estimated 1.3 million people living with HIV.

In addition to these health risks, travellers diarrhoea is the most common travel-related medical problem affecting travellers to Uganda. It is advisable to bring anti-diarrhoea medication and oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration. Travellers must take all necessary precautions when drinking water or eating food within the country and only drink water from sealed bottles obtained from a reputable source or water that has been boiled.

Tuberculosis is highly endemic in Uganda.

The Ugandan health service is limited compared to Western standards. Facilities of a reasonable standard are confined to the major cities; in the case of a serious accident or illness, an evacuation by air ambulance may be required. Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended, although it may not be accepted in some places; payment for medical services is one situation where a supply of US dollars may prove useful. Travellers are strongly advised to carry adequate supplies of basic and preventative medicines, as local supplies may be limited.

Pass

All visitors to Uganda require a passport valid for at least six months.

Visum

Travellers can get a visa from their local Ugandan consular service or at Entebbe airport on arrival. Travellers can be fined and/or imprisoned for overstaying their visa, but can apply to extend the period of their stay at Ugandan immigration headquarters on Jinja Road in Kampala.

All visitors (single visit, student and business) must also possess a valid visa, except for citizens of the following countries: Angola, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Burundi, Comoros, Cyprus, Eritrea, Eswatini, Fiji, Gambia, Grenada, Italy (Diplomatic Passport holders only), Jamaica, Ireland, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Madagascar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Tanzania, Tonga, Vanuatu, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Visitors must also produce a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.
