There is a high risk from terrorism, despite efforts by security agencies in preventing large scale attacks such as the 2009 Jakarta Ritz Carlton and Marriott hotel bombings. After a brief lull, a major attack took place in central Jakarta in January 2016, leaving at least eight people dead and dozens more wounded including foreigners. Travellers should exercise caution when travelling to Aceh, Central Sulawesi Province (especially Palu, Poso and Tentena), Maluku Province (especially Ambon), Papua and West Papua Province due to potential for violence or violent conflict. Security forces had recently engaged in fierce clashes with the Poso militants, killings its top leader, Abu Wardah Santoso. There are also fears of reprisals following Santoso's death. While recent attacks have focused on state agents such as the police force, foreign embassies and local authorities continue to highlight a threat of terrorism directed towards western interests. Also, protests by religious extremist groups such as the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) have occasionally turned violent. The most recent unrest occurred in May 2019 in the aftermath of the presidential election results declaration that gave incumbent leader Joko Widodo a victory. Unrest perpetrated by supporters of the other candidate, Prabowo Subianto erupted in Jakarta and they lasted for several days. Kidnappings should also not be ruled out with several foreign nationals being taken away in Aceh, Sumatra in 2013.

Hälsa, sjukdomar och vaccination

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or a general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-6 weeks prior to travelling to Indonesia.

All travellers should be vaccinated against hepatitis A before travelling. A typhoid vaccination is recommended for those eating and drinking outside of major restaurants and hotels. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is recommended for those staying for more than one month in rural areas. A rabies vaccination is recommended for those likely to be in direct contact with animals. A yellow fever vaccination is essential for travellers arriving from infected countries in Africa or the Americas. Travellers should also ensure that polio, measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) and tetanus-diphtheria vaccines are up-to-date.

Malaria tablets should be taken if travelling to rural parts of Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan or any part of eastern Indonesia. Travellers are not at risk from malaria in Jakarta, Bali or Java (with the exception of central regions). In all areas it is advisable to apply insect repellent to minimise the risk of mosquito bites.

Indonesia has had a number of outbreaks of dengue fever. Cases have been reported in a number of provinces – including Jakarta and Bali – popular with overseas visitors. As dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes, insect protection measures are essential.

Cases of the following diseases have also been reported, although the risk to travellers is limited: chikungunya fever, cholera, anthrax and polio. More recently, cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus were also being reported though they remain manageable.

Travellers are advised not to drink tap water. Bottled water is widely available.

Indonesian hospitals are considerably less well equipped than western facilities, particularly when it comes to dealing with emergencies or serious illnesses. Expatriates often choose to visit services such as International SOS or Global Doctor in the event of a problem. Be aware than only Indonesian doctors can treat patients at Indonesian facilities. In the event of a serious emergency, some expatriates prefer to travel to Singapore or Australia to get treatment. It is sensible to ensure that travel insurance covers you for such eventualities.

Doctors can be found at clinics in most towns and cities, although you may have to wait a long time for treatment. You will have to pay in cash in advance for treatment.

There are many pharmacies in most Indonesian towns and cities, many stocking well-known brands.

Passports are required in order to enter Indonesia. Passports must be valid for at least six months or entry may be refused.

Visa free travel: Citizens of over 160 countries including EU, the countries of the Americas(except for Colombia), Russia, China and Australia can enter Indonesia without a visa and stay for a maximum of 30 days. Onward or return tickets must be carried and entry must be through a permitted airport or seaport. Travellers wishing to stay for longer than 30 days on a tourist visa must apply for their visa in advance and for most countries, it can be done through the new e-visa system. Handwritten applications will no longer be accepted unless a person is a diplomat or due to other circumstances.

Business Visa: Visas are required for all business travellers and are available for either single-entry (up to 60 days) or multiple-entry. For a multiple-entry visa, the business contact in Indonesia will need to apply on behalf of the traveller.

Student Visa: Required. Evidence of acceptance onto a course of study in Indonesia is also required.

For those visitors staying in private accommodation (other than hotels), you are required to register with the Indonesian police upon your arrival. Fines can be applied for not doing so.
