Översikt

Kazakhstan is perceived as the most stable of the former Soviet republics in central Asia. The threat of conflict is limited by the strength of the state and its security forces and is unlikely to escalate in the foreseeable future. However, organised crime in the form of corruption is pervasive in Kazakhstan’s judiciary, police, customs and commercial and construction sectors. Graft particularly impacts future foreign investment through restrictive state intervention and arbitrary bureaucratic procedures, which can manifest in fines, bribes, permit delays and various forms of fraud. Major corruption has accompanied economic growth, as the government distributes extensive oil and gas downwards to clients throughout society. Several foreign companies have been forced to come to settlements over the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for bribing Kazakh officials, particularly in the oil sector. Its capital was renamed from Astana to Nursultan in honour of the former president Nursultan Nazarbayev who stepped down in March 2019. A presidential election was held several months later though it has been greeted with skepticisms with street protests being held subsequently.

Hälsa, sjukdomar och vaccination

You are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner to obtain the latest information on recommended vaccines 4-6 weeks before departure to Kazakhstan. You should also ensure that your routine vaccines for polio, measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), and diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT)) are up-to-date. It is also recommended that you be vaccinated against typhoid, and additionally that you consider being vaccinated against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies and tick-bourne encephalitis too.

Tick-borne encephalitis is common to Kazakhstan, especially in mountains and forests, particularly from April to June. To assist in combating this, you are also advised to use an insect repellent with 30-50 percent DEET. Covering up exposed skin by tucking trousers into socks and wearing boots rather than open toed shoes when visiting areas with ticks will also help.

High rates of drug resistant tuberculosis are also reported in Kazakhstan.

It is wise to avoid tap water unless it has been boiled, filtered or chemically disinfected. Similarly, avoid ice cubes, or food washed in local water unless it has been peeled or cooked. Dairy products are generally pasteurised, although it may prove sensible to confirm this before eating them.

Standards of medical facilities in Kazakhstan are deemed to fall well short of international standards, and consequently travellers are advised to obtain travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation. It should be noted that many doctors and hospitals will expect payment in cash, regardless of whether you have travel health insurance.

Pass

Passports are required to enter Kazakhstan, and must be valid for at least 6 months after your proposed departure date. Foreigners are required to carry their passport at all times, although certified copies are sometimes sufficient.

Visum

Most visitors to Kazakhstan require visas, which are available from your nearest Kazakh embassy. Some countries, such as the UK, can travel to Kazakhstan without a visa, provided they do not stay for longer than 30 days.

Single entry business and tourist visa do not require a letter of invitation, but multiple entry visas require a letter from an individual or organisational sponsor. Business visas must be applied for, approved and received prior to arrival in Kazakhstan. Some travellers wishing to remain more than 6 months may be required to obtain a work/residency permit.

Visitors may also be required to provide proof of their subsequent travel arrangements on crossing the border into Kazakhstan.
Visitors staying for more than 90 days must register with the local office of the Department for Visasand Registration under the Ministry of Internal Affairs (OVIR). Visitors must retain their white immigration card issued on entry into the country as it must be presented to immigration personnel when departing the country.

Visa extension is not permitted for tourist visas, but business visas can be lengthened up to a total length of 6 months if a letter of invitation from a Kazakh organisation is provided. To extend your visa you must contact the local office of the OVIR.

Kazakh authorities are very strict on visa non-compliance. Failure to abide by the terms of your visa could result in imprisonment, fines, delays to your departure and possibly a ban from entering Kazakhstan for up to five years.
