Overview
Despite having good road conditions, accidents are somewhat common due to unsafe driving habits. Public transport is limited, but taxis are widely available and cheap. Air travel is safe. Uncleared minefields still exist along the borders of the demilitarised zone between the southern and northern parts of the island.
Travel Safety
Air Travel
The majority of travellers arrive at Larnaca International Airport (LCA/LCLK) on the south coast, which is 40km (25 miles) from Nicosia. The airport is the main hub for the Cypriot flag carrier, Cyprus Airways. The airline has a good safety record, with no serious incidents in recent years. Security at the airport conforms to European Union (EU) standards. There have been no serious security breaches or safety incidents involving passengers in recent years. Petty crime rates are low at Larnaca Airport but always keep bags close to you and ensure valuables are placed in secure pockets.
Public transport links from the airport to other parts of Cyprus are limited. Taxis are available outside the terminal building, but the airport taxi system is not separate from the national taxi system. This results in frequent overcharging of travellers. Travellers are recommended to book a taxi in advance for the drive to Nicosia. If you are unable to book in advance, always negotiate with the driver before getting into the taxi. Ride services are widely available, including Cabcy, Bolt, Ntaxi, Haanktaxi, and Itaxi. Car rentals are also available, with a variety of international and local firms operating out of the arrivals hall.
Paphos International Airport (PFO/LCPH) on the east coast is Cyprus's second main airport. Taxis are available outside the terminal building, but most will only go to destinations close to the airport. Car hire desks are located in the arrivals hall.
Ercan Airport (ECN/LCEN) is located in the north of the country, but all flights entering Ercan must first land in mainland Türkiye.
Airspace
Following the European Union (EU) Commission announcement that all EU airspace will be closed to Russian-owned, Russian-registered and Russian-controlled aircraft, including private planes and for overflights, all flights to and from Russia will be banned until further notice, in line with EU sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Borders and Entry
Visa restrictions: Immigration Officers at the designated ports and border crossings could deny entry to travellers with visas obtained through the TRNC missions abroad.
Identification
Most travellers will need a passport to enter Cyprus. The passport must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure, have been issued within the last ten years and have two blank pages.
Travellers with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral" may be denied entry. Contact the nearest embassy, high commission or consulate to confirm if entry is allowed with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral". The country's laws on LGBTQ people are conservative, and overall social acceptance is low. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travellers in Cyprus might face legal and social difficulties.
Officials may deny entry to travellers with passports and visas issued by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Road Travel
Traffic moves on the left. Speed limits are 50kph (31 mph) in built-up areas, 80kph (50 mph) on rural roads and 100kph (60 mph) on motorways. Penalties for speeding vary, but fines and licence suspension are possible. The legal threshold for driving under the influence of alcohol is 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood. Motorways and main rural roads are well-surfaced, although poor lighting can make driving hazardous at night. Some sections of inland rural roads are poorly paved with large potholes, especially on the Karpasia Peninsula. Cyprus has a high rate of road accidents, mainly due to the aggressive driving styles of locals.
Public Transport
Ferries and Boats: International ferry connections to the Republic of Cyprus are generally irregular. Pleasure cruises to Israel, Egypt and Lebanon run occasionally in the summer months, but these are not practical travel options as they take several days. Ferries connect the TRNC to mainland Türkiye. A ferry service sails three times a week between Gazimagusa and Türkiye's Mersin. Gergun and Akgunler have daily passenger ferries to Türkiye's Girne and Tasucu, respectively. In summer, there is a twice-weekly ferry from Kyrenia to Türkiye's Alanya. The boats used for these services can be considered safe, albeit old. If entering Cyprus through the TRNC, you should be aware that it may be problematic to leave the island through the south due to customs and visa regulations.
Buses: Bus services in Southern Cyprus are modern and generally run on time. This website provides travellers with accurate information on routes, timetables and fares. However, bus services in the TRNC were not part of the reorganisation and are unreliable. Buses in Northern Cyprus or Dolmuş generally only leave when full and do not follow set schedules. On most routes, both in and out of towns, buses can be expected at each stop every 30 minutes to an hour.
Taxis: Taxis are widely available and cheap. Unlicensed cabs operate in busy areas, particularly during the summer months. These should be avoided by travellers, as overcharging is common and drivers may become threatening if you refuse to pay their inflated fares. Licensed taxis can be identified by their number plates, which start with 'T'. They may additionally have a rooftop 'TAXI' sign. Licensed taxis may also overcharge, and passengers should insist that drivers use their meters. It is also advisable to book taxis in advance rather than hail one on the street.
Vehicle Hire: There is a wide range of international and local car hire firms operating in Cyprus. Although most local firms can be relied on and are generally cheaper, you should always ensure you use a reputable company. If hiring a car, you should be aware that traffic on the island can be very heavy. In urban areas, traffic jams are common throughout the day until late in the evening. Visitors who use rental cars should bear in mind that special insurance cover notes are needed when crossing into the north of Cyprus.
