Guinea

Översikt

Guinea is among the poorest countries in the world in economic terms, but has extensive mineral reserves, including bauxite, iron ore, gold and diamonds, as well as fertile soil and ample rainfall. However, the government has grown dependent on revenues from the extractive industry, which for decades has supported a host of authoritarian leaders and an unfree political system. Guinea has moved to shore up its democratic credentials since a military coup in 2008, with a transitional government appointed in 2010 to establish an elected government. However, the political system remains fragile and vulnerable to breakdown, with ethnic violence a major concern after elections, with tensions exacerbated by the Ebola epidemic of 2013-2015. Although the health crisis has since receded, it has left significant anger over the government's response. Widespread corruption in government, poor border control and pervasive crime add to the risks associated with operating in Guinea.

Hälsa, sjukdomar och vaccination

It is advisable to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information about 4 to 8 weeks before departing for Guinea. Standard vaccination recommendations for travel to Guinea are: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Yellow Fever, Polio, Typhoid, MMR and Tetanus-Diphtheria. Meningococcal meningitis is recommended in the dry season between November and June. Travellers to rural regions or who may be exposed to animals should have a Rabies vaccination.

The Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers from infected areas.

Malaria is endemic to Guinea and preventative medicine is recommended in the form of Lariam, Malarone or Doxycycline. Your local doctor should be consulted and information will be given about any possible adverse reactions. Insect protection measures are essential.

Travellers’ diarrhoea is the most common health problem. As such, all travellers should bring anti-diarrheal drugs in addition to oral rehydration salts.

Other infections include Schistosomiasis (located in fresh water), African sleeping sickness (prevalent in rural areas), Rift Valley fever, Lymphatic filariasis, Onchocerciasis, Lassa fever, cholera and Dengue fever.

HIV infection is prevalent and thus standard precautions should be used to avoid exposure.

Tap water should not be drunk unless it has been boiled, filtered or chemically disinfected. In addition, avoid fruits and vegetables unless they have been cooked or peeled. Also avoid food and beverages obtained from street vendors.

Ebola is also present in the country, with Guinea being a source country of the major 2014-15 outbreak in West Africa. Usually, outbreaks are small and contained to rural areas.

Medical facilities are extremely basic, with little or no provision in rural areas. Basic medical supplies should be carried on person. It is advisable to purchase comprehensive medical insurance, however doctors and hospitals will often demand payment in cash regardless of this. Emergency repatriation clauses must ensure that Guinea is covered. If the condition is serious immediate evacuation to Europe is advisable.

Pass

Passports must be valid up to 6 months from the date of exiting the country. An international vaccination record (WHO card) and current Yellow Fever vaccination are also required for entry.

Visum

Visas are required for travel to Guinea in many cases, although a large number of African nations do not require visas. Travellers should gain their visa from a Guinean consulate or embassy at least three days prior to travel.

Business visas require a sponsor letter from both your employer and host company in Guinea. The letters should specify applicant, travel and employment information (including guarantee of financial support), purpose of visit, and local contact information in the host country. Transit visas are required except for those continuing with their journey within 24 hours to another nation.

Single entry visas are valid for up to one month, while multiple entry visas are valid for up to three months. This applies to both tourist and business visas.
