Pass

Most travellers will need a passport to enter Kyrgyzstan. The passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of arrival and have one blank page.

Visum

Visa-free entry is available for certain travellers who qualify based on nationality and purpose of travel. A visa on arrival scheme is in place for select travellers, but often depends on nationality, purpose of travel and port of entry. All other travellers will need to obtain a visa from the nearest embassy or consulate or apply online (e-visa) prior to travel.

Entry visa requirements vary based on nationality, purpose of travel and other factors. Individual travellers are responsible for ensuring that they comply with all visa requirements, which should be confirmed with authorities at their destination prior to travel.

Visa Free Travel

Visa-free travel to Kyrgyzstan (7 days): Foreign nationals of India and China holding a long-term visa for the United States, the United Kingdom and the Schengen Area, can enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa for up to seven days. Travellers are advised to check requirements prior the departure.

Visa-free travel to Kyrgyzstan (30 days): Foreign nationals of selected countries can enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa for up to 30 days. Travellers are advised to check requirements prior the departure.

Overview

Kyrgyzstan is one of the safest countries in central Asia for foreign travellers, though political instability and unrest occasionally cause personal security concerns. Roads outside major cities like Bishkek are underdeveloped, especially in the south, hence road accidents are frequent. It is recommended that visitors use a local guide when travelling. Air travel is the safest mode of transport for travel between provinces, while other forms of public transport like buses and trains are limited and have poor safety records.

Travel Safety

Air Travel

The most likely point of arrival by air in Kyrgyzstan is Manas International Airport (BSZ/UCFM) in the capital, Bishkek. In addition to international flights, there are several flights each day from Bishkek to the main cities. The flight from Bishkek to Osh takes less than an hour. Airport security is relatively relaxed and, aside from occasional reports of customs officials harassing foreign nationals, for the most part, the process is an easy one. Safety is good, with the airport operating up-to-date air traffic control systems.

Taxi drivers are extremely competitive at the airport, vying for clientele, and visitors should make sure to agree on a rate in advance for transport into the city centre. Travelling on the Kyrgyz national airline (Kyrgyzstan Airlines) is not advised, as the company does not meet international standards.

Borders and Entry

Health-related surveillance measures:

  • Authorities are enforcing mpox-related screening measures on inbound travellers at the country’s airports, railway stations and land border crossings.
  • Authorities are enforcing plague surveillance measures at the country’s entry points, effective until further notice, to prevent the entry of the disease. Travellers may be subject to thermal screening.

Identification

Most travellers will need a passport to enter Kyrgyzstan. The passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of arrival and have one blank page.
Travellers with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral" are not allowed entry. The country's laws on LGBTQ people are conservative, and overall social acceptance is low. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travellers in Kyrgyzstan might face legal and social difficulties.

Road Travel

Traffic moves on the right side of the road. The roads throughout the country are poor and dangerous, and, outside of Bishkek, often littered with large potholes that can render vehicles inoperable. Many roads are extremely dusty and unpaved. Drivers often drive on either side of the road to avoid potholes, making driving, especially after dark, treacherous. Police have the authority to randomly stop you and a small bribe is usually required.

Driving alone or outside of Bishkek without a proper guide is not recommended, and foreign nationals could become victims of hijacking or ambush. In particular, the road from Bishkek to the southern city of Osh makes for a tense 16-hour drive and traffic accidents are frequent. The country's mountain passes are difficult to navigate and often traverse territory where there are tensions between local Kyrgyz and ethnic Russians. Border areas are particularly dangerous, with frequent reports of hijackings perpetrated by men dressed as law enforcement officials or posing as undercover police. The best way to travel near the border areas is with a tour bus, but even then visitors should be alert to the risks of danger in these often lawless areas.

Rail Travel

Trains are a less popular form of travel for foreign nationals and are not used for inner-city purposes. Trains can be taken from Bishkek to Moscow and to Balikchy on Kyrgyzstan's Lake Issyk-Kul. The service is slow and the trains are old.

Public Transport

Buses: International bus services are limited and unreliable. However, there are regular bus connections to all parts of Kyrgyzstan from most major towns. They leave from long-distance bus stations and usually on a timetable. Vehicles tend to be old, crowded, poorly maintained and slow. However, they are very cheap and sometimes the only option available besides hiring a private car or taxi. Buses and trolleybuses also run regularly within the larger cities. Although poorly looked after, these buses are largely safe. Pickpocketing is the main risk, particularly during crowded rush hour.

Minibuses: Mini-buses, called marshrutkas, operate in Kyrgyzstan's larger towns. They travel fixed routes, stopping at designated but unmarked stops. Drivers tend to be flexible about stopping and will let you on/off anywhere if you ask them. As they are small vehicles, they are often extremely crowded, and it can be difficult to get on and off. This also allows pickpocketing, so keep valuables in a closed and secure pocket. While they are reliable and very cheap, they take a long time to reach your destination. An ongoing fuel shortage has affected the number of services running. Minibuses also operate between towns but are often slow and prone to breakdowns.

Taxis: Taxis are inexpensive, though drivers will attempt to charge foreign nationals exorbitant prices if it is clear that they do not know the usual rates. Unofficial taxis may also offer you a ride, but it is always safer to take official taxis as foreign nationals could become targets of muggings by private drivers. Women are at risk of harassment at night and should avoid taking taxis, even official ones, alone after dark. There have also been some reported taxi scams, in which drivers refuse to hand over your luggage until you pay more than the price agreed on once at your destination. Taxis can also be booked through ride-sharing apps, namely Yandex Go.

Vehicle Hire: It is not possible to rent a car without a driver through a travel agent in Kyrgyzstan. Cars and drivers are a convenient and relatively safe way to traverse the country, as the driver often serves as a guide as well.
