Pengar

The local currency in Seychelles is Seychelles rupees (SCR). As of 6 October 2026 100 SCR is equal to 6.7 USD. In addition to the local currency, EUR and USD may be accepted for payment in some places.

Currency exchange can be done at banks and exchange offices.

Travellers should be prepared to use either cash or credit or debit card to make payments. Credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are only available in urban and/or tourist areas.

It should be noted that all tourism-related purchases are required to be paid in foreign currency, such as hotel rooms, restaurant meals, scuba diving and boat chartering. Most major credit cards and travellers’ cheques (US Dollars, Euros or Sterling) are widely accepted on Mahe and in other touristic areas. Banking hours extend from 0830 to 1430 Monday to Friday and 0830 to 1100 on Saturdays.

Most hotels, restaurants, taxis, and porters already include a 5-10% service charge so tipping is not obligatory. However, as a reward for exceptional service, a nominal tip is sure to be appreciated.

El

The power supply in Seychelles is reliable. Electricity operates on 240V at 50Hz using plug type(s) G.

Pass

Most travellers will need a passport to enter The Seychelles. The passport must be valid for the duration of the stay.

Visum

Travellers may qualify for a visa waiver, however this requires the completion of a security check or travel authorisation prior to departure.

Entry visa requirements vary based on nationality, purpose of travel and other factors. Individual travellers are responsible for ensuring that they comply with all visa requirements, which should be confirmed with authorities at their destination prior to travel.

Visa Waivers

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Most travellers (except Kosovans) are allowed entry without a visa but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travel. Upon arrival, travellers will be granted a visitor's permit valid for up to 3 months, renewable for successive periods not exceeding 3 months at a time to a maximum period of 12 months.

Overview

Public transport is safe, reliable and accessible, but it can often require several transfers to reach some destinations and can be overcrowded, particularly during rush hours. The Seychelles has no railroads. Road conditions are generally good, but roads can be narrow and winding and can quickly deteriorate during adverse weather conditions. International and domestic flights are safe and frequent. Ferries are available for inter-island trips.

Travel Safety

Air Travel

Seychelles International Airport (SEZ/FSIA), located 11km (6.8 miles) from Victoria on Mahé, is the country’s main international airport and offers several regional and domestic flights. The airport has both domestic and international terminals and adequate facilities. Seychelles Airport is a hub for Air Seychelles, which provides an efficient network of scheduled and chartered services from Mahé to Alphonse, Bird, Denis, Desroches Islands, Frégate and Praslin, as well as several international flights. Some international carriers operating out of this airport are Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Condor and Qatar Airways. The airport is served by buses and taxis; car rental services are available. Several coaches also offer services to the ferry terminals.

Several other airports, some with hard-surfaced runways, offer domestic connections, including on Praslin and Assumption Islands.

Borders and Entry

Entry requirement: All inbound travellers, including foreign nationals and citizens, must fill out the online immigration form to be permitted entry.

Health-related surveillance measures: Authorities implemented Ebola surveillance measures at the country’s entry points, effective until further notice, to prevent the entry of the disease.

Identification

Most travellers will need a passport to enter The Seychelles. The passport must be valid for the duration of the stay.
Travellers with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral" may be denied entry. Contact the nearest embassy, high commission or consulate to confirm if entry is allowed with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral". The country's laws on LGBTQ people are conservative, and overall social acceptance is low. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travellers in The Seychelles might face legal and social difficulties.

Kosovo passport holders are not allowed to enter Seychelles, as the country doesn't recognise the state of Kosovo.

Required Documents

Entry requirement: All arrivals must apply for mandatory Travel Authorization and pay a EUR10 fee. As part of the Travel Authorization, passengers are required to submit copy of their passport and proof of accommodation at an approved establishment. Seychelles citizens are no longer required to fill in the Electronic Disembarkation form. Document link: https://seychelles.govtas.com/

Road Travel

Traffic moves on the left in the Seychelles. The roads are generally well-maintained but are narrow and winding. You should exercise caution when driving due to limited shoulders and inadequate street lighting. Road conditions and visibility can quickly deteriorate, especially during heavy rainfall. Sidewalks are not common and drivers should be mindful of pedestrians. Local drivers are generally safe, but drunk driving is a problem. The speed limit is generally set at 65 kph (40mph) on open roads and 40 kph (25mph) in urban or built-up areas; however, these may differ depending on the island. The driver, as well as front seat passengers, are required to wear seat belts. There are no laws regarding child safety seats.

Public Transport

Bicycles: It is not recommended to hire a bicycle due to the traffic-related accidents, except in the south of the island where there is less traffic. A car will allow you to see most attractions and facilitate smoother transportation to destinations.

Ferries and Boats: There are privately owned schooners and boats operating between the islands. The quality and professionalism of the boat operators varies and foreign visitors are encouraged to make enquiries about the safety of the various service providers. Smaller boats are also available between the islands but might be unreliable and slower.

Buses: The SPTC Company runs regular bus services in Praslin and Mahé. There are several bus charter companies in Praslin and Mahé.

Taxis: In Mahé and Praslin there are several hundred independently run taxis. Taxis are a safe and reliable mode of transport for short trips and can even be used for day trips. The level of service and quality of the vehicles is generally good and varies little. There are fewer taxis in La Digue. The taxis follow a government-dictated pricing model- but foreign visitors are encouraged to confirm the cost of the fares before setting off in the taxi. A surcharge for night travel might be applied, particularly in Praslin.

Online ride-hailing app services, namely LinkUp, are more recommended than traditional taxis when possible as they have a fixed fare and are safer.

Vehicle Hire: There are car rental companies in Mahé, but fewer available cars to rent in Praslin. Visitors are advised to make reservations well in advance of their arrival, particularly during the high season. There is normally no limit on the distance covered and third-party insurance is standard. Most companies will not hire a car for drivers younger than 21 years old. Petrol is expensive, on average one-third more than in most European countries.
