Since its creation in 1948, Israel has had a turbulent history characterised by war, instability and faltering peace processes with Palestine and the wider Arab world. The rump state of Israel functions as a coherent and developed territorial entity, with a stable elected government and levels of crime comparable to cities in Europe. The occupied Palestinian Territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are administered separately by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas respectively. The West Bank is a patchwork of mostly-urban Palestinian enclaves that are surrounded by steadily growing and heavily-fortified Israeli settlements, which are connected by a road network that segregates users based on their national status. Gaza is a densely-populated, dysfunctional and besieged micro-state, from which militant groups periodically fire missiles indiscriminately into southern Israel.

In Israel itself, public disaffection, corruption scandals, the rising cost of living and the deterioration of public services are further sources of political instability. Tel Aviv is sporadically hit by episodes of mass, albeit non-violent, anti-government protests. The city has also been rocked by a series of protests involving Ethiopian migrants since late 2014, with violent clashes erupting between protesters and police. Protests are frequently held in Jerusalem after the Friday prayers, including destinations that are popular with tourists, such as the old city.

Hälsa, sjukdomar och vaccination

Travellers are advised to consult a travel health specialist or general practitioner (GP) to obtain the latest information with regards to what vaccines are recommended about 4-6 weeks prior to departing for Israel.

Travellers should have the following vaccines up to date: polio, hepatitis A, measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), typhoid and diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT). Vaccination against rabies may also be recommended.

Although, water is regarded safe to drink throughout Israel, bottled water is advised for the first few weeks of the stay. Milk is pasteurised. Dairy products, meat, fish and vegetables are also regarded as safe for consumption.

It is recommended that enough medicines are carried to last the duration of the trip. Medicines should be kept in their original prescription bottles and always in carry-on luggage.

Travellers can find information about after-hours pharmacies and emergency medical facilities and in the English language edition of "Ha'aretz" newspapers or the "Jerusalem Post".

We strongly recommend travellers to consult with their medical insurance company prior to travelling to Israel to confirm whether their policy applies overseas and whether it will cover emergency expenses such as a medical evacuation.

Although it is advisable to acquire a comprehensive travel health insurance before travelling, this insurance is unlikely to cover medical costs at most facilities. Doctors and hospitals will expect payment in cash, regardless of whether you have travel health insurance. Life-threatening medical problems may require air evacuation.

Pass

Generally, a passport valid for at least six months after date of departure is required. Furthermore, proof of sufficient funds, and an onward or return ticket are required for entry.

Please be advised that former nationals of Israel, now holding a foreign passport, are required to show written proof of having given up Israeli citizenship. Otherwise, they may be required to renew their original Israeli passport or obtain a new one.

Visum

Generally, a visa is not required for tourist purposes for stays up to three months for citizens of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, or the UK. However, the US Department of State informs that US citizens may be subject to special restrictions.

Therefore, we recommend checking with the relevant Embassy or Consulate in your home country in advance.

A visa may be required for other types of visit or stay. Additional information on entry and registration requirements, including those for work permits, may be obtained from the Israeli Embassy or Consulate in your home country. Furthermore, please also contact the Israeli embassy in your home country if you are planning to stay for longer than three months.

Travellers wishing to cross the Allenby Bridge between Jordan and the West Bank, or to visit Gaza, are required to contact the relevant Israeli authorities in advance to obtain visas.
